Britain’s royal baby: Kate in labour for the latest royal addition

Prince William and Kate Middleton

Prince William and Kate MiddletonThe Duchess of Cambridge Kate Midleton has gone into labour, as the world’s media gathers outside the hospital awaiting news for the arrival of Britain’s royal baby.

Prince William’s wife has been admitted to the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, west London, shortly after 5.30a.m., by which time she was already in the early stages of labour which was progressing as normal.

The couple, both 31, made their way to the hospital without a police escort.

Royal vehicles were seen at a back entrance to the hospital at about 6:00 BST, with the announcement coming from Kensington Palace 90 minutes later.

The couple is unaware of the gender of their first child, who will be third in line to the throne.

The world’s press have been camped outside St Mary’s for days in anticipation of the birth. The due date had never been officially announced but had widely been expected to be mid-July.

The Duchess was taken into St Mary’s through side entrance of the Mary Stanford wing, which is adjacent to the Lindo, in order to dodge the photographers who have waited since the start of the month for a glimpse of her.

Aides waited until Kate had been seen by her medical team, led by the Queen’s former gynaecologist Marcus Setchell, and was “settled” in her private room before making the official announcement.

At 7.28p.m. Kensington Palace released a statement saying: “Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge has been admitted this morning to St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington, London, in the early stages of labour.

“The Duchess travelled by car from Kensington Palace to the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital with The Duke of Cambridge.”

The Queen, senior members of the Royal Family, and the duchess’s family – in case of their absence from the hospital – will be told about the birth first.
