Daniel PelkaA “heartless” mother and stepfather of a four-year-old boy Daniel Pelka, who mistreated the boy after subjecting him to six months of systematic starvation and “incomprehensible” cruelty are found guilty of the murder.

Daniel Pelka died from a head injury in Coventry in March 2012.

Weeks before the boy’s murder, his teaching staff witnessed the bruises to his neck and black eyes, is the subject of a serious case review by Coventry’s safeguarding children board.

In a nine-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court the boy’s thin body was likened by a doctor to that of a concentration camp victim.

Daniel’s mother Magdelena Luczak, 27, and her partner, Mariusz Krezolek, 34, had refused the murder charges.

During the trial, both the defendant – a former soldier Krezolek and Daniel’s mother Luczak, presented before the court a different version of events about what happened and blamed each other for Daniel’s death during the trial.

But text messages between the couple verified that they worked as a team to impose the sickening abuse and even decided not to summon an ambulance as Daniel lay dying with more than 20 separate injuries.

The court has been told that Daniel’s head injury was one of 30 he suffered and due to continuous starvation, the weight of the boy dropped from 14.8kg (32.6lb) in January 2011 to only 10.7 kg (24 lbs) at the time of his death.

Det Insp of West Midlands Police, Chris Hanson has told: “He was beaten, he was drowned, and he was poisoned with salt.

“It was an absolutely wretched existence for him.”

The Crown Prosecution Service said starving Daniel had been forced to steal food from fellow pupils and from school dustbins.

Daniel’s biological father, Eryk Pelka has said: “It’s a great tragedy that such a little angel had to leave this world.

“I hope that those responsible will be punished severely.”

It has been found that the couple was drinking heavily and taking drugs, including cannabis and amphetamines, at the time of the abuse.

The pair will be sentenced on Friday.
