The victim Lee RigbyWoolwich murder trial regarding “cowardly and callous murder” of soldier Drummer Lee Rigby with knives and meat cleaver against the two accused individuals Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale have been opened on Friday.

Both defendants Michael Adebolajo 28, and Michael Adebowale 22, are also alleged of attempted murder of a policeman at Old Bailey. They have denied both charges of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to murder.

The prosecutor Richard Whittam QC has told the jury about the “truly shocking” case of murder as the accused “almost decapitated” the body of the young soldier.

The court heard that Mr. Adebolajo and Mr. Adebowale drove their Vauxhall Tigra “straight into” Rigby as he crossed the road, shortly after 2p.m. on Wednesday 22 May and knocked him unconscious, before attacking him with knives and a meat cleaver in a “cowardly and callous murder”.

Mr. Whittam has told the jury that Adebowale had stabbed the motionless body of soldier while Adebolajo attempted to cut his head off. Then they had dragged his body into the middle of the road because “they wanted members of the public to see the consequence of what can only be described as their barbarous acts”.

A witness had told the court that Adebolajo’s actions during the attack were similar to “a butcher attacking a joint of meat”.

Both suspects have admitted possessing a firearm with the intention to create violence.

The prosecution QC had shown CCTV footage to the court regarding Adebolajo buying a block of kitchen knives and a knife sharpener from a south London branch of the retailer Argos on May 21, the day before the incident happened.

Mr. Rigby – the victim and father of a young son, had joined the British army in 2006 and had served in Afghanistan.
