PC Keith WallisA Metropolitan police officer Keith Wallis accused of falsely claiming to have witnessed the “plebgate” row involving Andrew Mitchell in Downing Street has pleaded guilty to misconduct in public office.

PC Wallis, 53, of West Drayton, west London, had claimed to have witnessed an argument between the former chief whip and officers at the gates 10 Downing Street on 19 September 2012.

The incident happens as Mr. Mitchell became involved in a heated confrontation with another police officer, Toby Rowland, after he was not permitted to cycle through the main gate and was asked to use the pedestrian gate instead.

Afterwards, the incident was termed as “plebgate” as Mr. Mitchell was accused of calling the guarding police officer a “pleb”.

However, Mr. Mitchell had admitted swearing during the incident but has continuously denied Pc Rowland’s claims that he swore directly at police or used the word “pleb” and also stepped down from his role of chief whip.

After the guilty plea, Met Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe apologised to Mr. Mitchell.

Former Conservative chief whip has welcomed the guilty plea and stated: “I am pleased that justice has been done in a criminal court today.

“It is very sad and worrying for all of us that a serving police officer should have behaved in this way. There remain many questions unanswered, in particular why Pc Wallis wrote this email and who else was involved in this process.”

“I am looking forward to seeing justice done in the up to 10 other related disciplinary cases involving police officers so that I can focus all my energy on delivering for my constituents and help David Cameron win a Conservative majority at the 2015 Election.”

Pc Wallis, who has offered to resign from Metropolitan police, will be sentenced on 6 February.
