Three missing kayakers’ bodies recovered from River Tyne

After a major police search and rescue operation, three missing kayakers belonged to one family have been found dead in River Tyne in Northumberland.

Police were alerted when the South Shields men failed to return home on Sunday night after going kayaking in Hexham. After the alerts were raised, Emergency services along with the RAF and the Coastguard began searching for the trio along the River Tyne near Riding Mill.

The major inquiry then led to the recovery of one body from the river at Riding Mill at 05.00 and the other in the Corbridge area at 06.20 which are being identifying. The third body was located under the Broomhaugh A68 bridge, Riding Mill at 13:15.

Out of three deceased individuals, two were brothers, aged 41 and 40, and the third was their cousin, aged 36, all from South Shields, South Tyneside.

Formal identification is yet to take place on the three bodies found. However, it is believed they are the bodies of the three missing kayakers.

The Northumbria Police has told the men had planned their trip and were aware of stretch of the river well.

Chief Superintendent Gordon Milward has stated: “The weather was unpredictable, in terms of some very heavy showers and the river was higher than usual and fast-flowing.

“They would be challenging conditions for anybody who decided to go into the water.”

Police will continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the deaths and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
