The heads of EU member states have elected the former Luxembourg prime minister, Jean-Claude Juncker as the next President of the European Commission despite the strong objection of U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron.
The outgoing president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, has said in a tweeted message: “Decision made. The European Council proposes Jean-Claude Juncker as the next President of the European Commission.”
Mr Cameron, who failed to block the appointment of Mr Juncker as EC president, has told EU leaders the decision was “a sad moment” for Europe while adding: “I’ve told EU leaders they could live to regret the new process for choosing the commission president. I’ll always stand up for UK interests.”
After the EU leaders voted 26-2 to appoint Juncker at a summit in Brussels on Friday, Britain’s PM has told: “In a Europe crying out for reform we’ve gone for the career insider.
“The job has got harder of keeping Britain in a reformed European Union,” though “it’s still doable and I’m still committed to doing it.”
Hungary was the only member country among the 27 states, who backed Mr Cameron’s opposition to Juncker’s appointment.
Mr Cameron opposition to Mr Juncker’s nomination is due to the British PM’s view of him as an arch-federalist and roadblock to EU reform.
