The defence lawyer has told Leeds Crown Court on Friday that the 16-year-old teen student has ‘accepted responsibility for the unlawful killing’ of school teacher Ann Maguire in her classroom.
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, accused of stabbing the 61-year-old Spanish teacher at Corpus Christi Catholic College, in Leeds on 28 April who then later died of her wounds at Leeds General Infirmary, made an appearance via video-link at court.
The court has heard that expert psychiatric reports would now be prepared before the trial.
No pleas were entered but Richard Wright QC, defending has told: “He has accepted responsibility for the unlawful killing of the deceased”.
Paul Greaney QC, prosecuting, has said the boy did not admit murder, however added: “It does amount to an admission he’s guilty of manslaughter.”
A trial on the murder charge is scheduled to take place in November.
Both the judge, Judge Peter Collier QC and Mr Greaney have cautioned the public to remain extremely careful about discussing this case in social media netwoeks while stressing of having heavy penalties for naming the defendant or other details regarding the case ahead of the trial.
Mrs Maguire, a mother-of two from Moortown, Leeds, was just a few months away from her retirement in September after serving for more than four decades at the school.
Her murder was the first time a teacher has been stabbed to death in a British classroom and the first killing of a teacher in a school since the 1996 Dunblane massacre.
