The Ministry of Defence has dismissed the Scotland’s suggestion that the Red Arrows would use only blue and white colours to tribute the hosts of Glasgow Commonwealth games 2014 and deviate from their famous three colours of red, white and blue at the opening ceremony.

It has been reported that the change was authorised very late for the event’s programme, as the ceremony guide indicated they would be using only blue and smoke.

A spokeswoman for MoD has told: “The Red Arrows are ambassadors for the United Kingdom and are famous for their red, white and blue smoke trails which represent the whole of the UK.

“The flypast was to celebrate the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the Commonwealth and the presence of Her Majesty so it was fitting that red, white and blue were used.”

The nine Hawk T1 jets flew over Celtic Park as the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were arrived at the venue and driven into the arena.

A big audience of 40,000 in the stadium and an expected global audience of around one billion had witnessed the jets emit their iconic trails of red, white and blue smoke.

However, the Scottish Government had insisted that it made no approach to the organisers for any change of the colour of the smoke to be emitted.

The Commonwealth Games spokesperson has told: “The media guide had done to press earlier and the changes were made in an addendum. It was a mistake that was done in the editing of the guide.”
