Torrential downpours and hail storms have hit parts of South East England on Monday morning, causing flash flooding and travel chaos.

The thunder and lightning storms have hit the Hove, Brighton and Worthing areas of Sussex, resulting in the disruption to train service along the south coast.

An electricity substation was also hit with lightning at around 6.20am causing power cuts to the coastal rail route.

A Network Rail spokesperson has told: “There was a lightning strike at 6.20 at an electricity substation, which meant we lost the power supply to the third rail – which provides traction power to the trains. There have been delays and cancellations in the Brighton to Shoreham line, but not the main line to London.”

Most of the services have become normal now but earlier delays of up to half hour was likely until at least 9am this morning and could extend beyond that.

The Met Office have issued a severe weather warning for the south-east of England as more than half a month’s worth of rain fell in an hour duration in some places.

A Southern Water spokeswoman has said: “Torrential rain fell across Sussex this morning which has led to parts of our sewer network becoming overwhelmed by the sheer volume of water entering it.

“We are doing all we can to help customers affected by this.”

Sussex Police have also warned drivers to be careful as flash flooding hit Worthing, West Sussex, and Portslade and Mile Oak on the outskirts of Brighton and Hove.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s headquarters also forced to close after the basement flooded due to the heavy rain.

They have told essential services are being resumed and City clean are working with East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to clear roadside gullies.
