The deceased British tourists David Miller and Hannah WitheridgeThe Thai police have identified and named the two British tourists found murdered on a beach on the Thai island of Koh Tao.

The tourists named Hannah Witheridge, 23, from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and David Miller, 24, from Jersey, were located semi-naked and the police believe that they had apparently been attacked with a hoe.

The local police have claimed that the bodies of a man and a woman were found on island in the early hours of Monday morning on a rocky section of the shore around 100m from the scene of a beach party. It is understood that the pair had suffered serious head injuries.

Thailand police force member, Colonel Prachum Ruangthong has told that the clothes of the victims and the blood-stained hoe were found nearby the place of incident.

It is believed that the victims were not a couple, but had met recently on the island.

Police chief of Suratthani province, Gen. Kiatpong Khaosamang has said: “This is the first case in eight years” in which foreign tourists were fatally attacked on the island.

However, police have not singled out any possible suspects or a motive. But they plan to interview partygoers, friends of the victims, and migrant workers on the island. The surveillance camera footage will also be checked to gain some idea about the tragedy.

Col Prachum has said: “The man was chopped in the back and on the side of his head, while the woman was chopped in her face. It’s very gruesome.”

A Foreign Office spokesman has stated: “We are aware of the death of two British nationals on 15 September on the island of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand. The Embassy are urgently seeking information from the local authorities and Consular staff stand ready to provide assistance to friends and family at this tragic time.

“The Consul from Bangkok is travelling to Koh Tao as soon as possible.”
