Alex SalmondThe leader of Scottish National Party Alex Salmond has announced his resignation from the post of Scotland’s First Minister and SNP leader at the party’s annual conference in November.

The news came after Scots rejected the independence on Thursday, ending the debate for at least a generation with 55% to 45% majority against separation.

Mr Salmond has led the SNP for two decades and told to quit as First Minister of Scotland during the conference in Perth after party elects a new leader to gain some advantage from a change of leadership, as would the parliament and the country.

SNP leader has also insists on the need of a new leader to carry on the fight for the independence of Scotland, as he has stated in an emotional address: “For me as leader my time is nearly over, but for Scotland the campaign continues and the dream shall never die.”

Prime Minister David Cameron has responded to Mr Salmond’s announcement with a tweet: “Alex Salmond is a politician of huge talent and passion. He has been an effective First Minister, and always fights his corner.”

Labour leader Ed Miliband has also praised him by saying: “Alex Salmond is a formidable frontline politician.

Whatever our disagreements, he has always spoke his mind and he has always stood up for what he believed in.”

Deputy First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon has stated: “Alex Salmond’s achievements as SNP leader and Scotland’s First Minister are second to none. He led the SNP into government and has given our country a renewed self-confidence.”

However, Mr Salmond has not announced a complete walking away from politics, as obvious from his words “I will continue to offer to serve as Member of the Scottish Parliament for Aberdeenshire East” after resigning in November.
