The parents of missing teenage girl Alice Gross have told to be “completely devastated” over their daughter’s death after her body was recovered from River Brent.
Scotland Yard have confirmed the discovery of 14-year-old schoolgirl’s body from the River Brent in west London following a massive five-week search after her being missing since August 28.
Police is now treating the disappearance case as murder and also continue to for a Latvian suspect.
Before disappearing, Alice Gross was last seen walking on the Grand Union Canal towpath in west London. Just nearby that place, a convicted murderer and prime suspect Arnis Zalkalns, from Ealing, had also been seen on CCTV riding his bike the day she disappeared.
Police remained unable to trace the 41-year-old Zalkalns since he disappeared a week after Alice got missing. Fears are there that he may have fled to his native Latvia.
Met Commander Graham McNulty had said yesterday: “We are unable to make a formal identification at this stage but clearly this news is devastating for everyone involved in the search for Alice.
“My thoughts are with Alice’s family and friends. This is now a murder investigation and I need the public’s help to find whoever is responsible.
“Our work at this scene is crucial to ensure we capture all the available evidence allowing us to identify who is responsible for this dreadful crime.
“This may take some time and I ask people to remain patient with us. I can confirm that significant efforts were made to conceal the body.”
Alice’s parents, Rosalind Hodgkiss and Jose Gross, have stated: “We have been left completely devastated by the recent developments and it is difficult to comprehend that our sweet and beautiful daughter was the victim of a terrible crime.”
While praising her as “a loving and much-loved daughter and sister, a quirky live spark of a girl, beautiful inside and out”, they have no clue “why anyone would want to hurt her is something that we are struggling to come to terms with.”
The grieving family have also asked “people to continue to help the police by giving them information that could help bring the perpetrator to justice.”
