U.K. Independence Party eyes victory in second seat in British Parliament crucial as Rochester and Strood by-election is underway on Thursday.

In case the Eurosceptic party wins this vote then it would be a major blow to Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative party with general elections just six month away.

The by-election in southeast England was called after MP Mark Reckless defected in September from the Conservative Party to UKIP, which wants strict quotas on immigration.

Thirteen candidates set to compete for the seat vacated by Mark Reckless.

Polls have been opened at 7am today and will remain open until 10pm.

Among the prominent candidates, Mr Reckless will contest the seat for UKIP, alongside Kelly Tolhurst for the Conservatives, Naushabah Khan for Labour, Geoff Juby for the Lib Dems and Clive Gregory of the Green Party.

In addition to the above listed contestants, the other standing participants include Hairy Knorm Davidson of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party, Independents Mike Barker, Christopher Challis, Stephen Goldsbrough and Charlotte Rose; Jayda Fransen of Britain First, Nick Long of People Before Profit and Dave Osborn of the Patriotic Socialist Party.

Even when the polls favour UKIP, the Conservative candidate Kelly Tollhurst has maintained that she could pull off an unlikely victory, and requested from voters of all stripes to support her, as she said: “It’s a two-horse race and the reality of it is if we don’t want to wake up to a UKIP MP on Friday then people who would normally be voting for Labour, the Lib Dems and or anyone else, need to be voting for me.”

The poll results are expected to be announced on Friday.
