A man has died while several were injured in an alleged knife and axe attack outside Plymouth village pub during the early hours of New Year’s day.

It has been reported that police officers were called to a “major disturbance” in Kings Arms pub on The Green, at Tamerton Foliot, at about 01:30 GMT after drunken revellers clashed on the village green.

Various callers have reported that a man was in possession of a knife and an axe, with further calls of disorder later received.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson has told that a 27-year-old local man found dead at the scene and two others were treated at Derriford Hospital.

He has added that weapons were seized and two Plymouth men, aged 20 and 21, were also arrested on suspicion of murder. Both suspects detained at Charles Cross Police Station in Plymouth.

Detectives are investigating the case and currently treating the death as suspicious.

Detective Superintendent Jim Colwell told that the reason for the incident has not yet been identified.

He has said: “We know there were two weapons involved, we have recovered an axe type weapon from near the scene. We are keen to recover the second weapon described as a blade or knife.

“I would ask residents living in the area to look in their gardens and tell us if they find anything meeting that description.

He has added: “We have established a cordon at Station Road to assist with scene investigation and our officers will be active in the area throughout the day conducting enquiries.”
