UKIP leader Nigel Farage, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Liberal Democrats leader Nick CleggThe Liberal Democrats, Labour and U.K. Independence Party leaders have expressed their willingness to go ahead with pre-election televised debates even if Prime Minister David Cameron refuses to participate.

The declaration follows the Conservative leader’s announcement that he would not take part in any televised debates unless a fifth party, the Greens, will also be invited to participate in debates.

All three party leaders Ed Miliband, Nick Clegg and Nigel Farage have written letters to the PM saying it would be “unacceptable” for him not to take part in proposed discussions and that they intend to proceed with the debates even without him.

The letter states: “I believe it would be a major setback to our democratic processes if these debates were not repeated in 2015 because of one politician’s unwillingness to participate.

“It would be unacceptable if the political self-interest of one party leader were to deny the public the opportunity to see their leaders debate in public.

Therefore, if you are unwilling to reconsider, the three party leaders who have committed to participate will ask the broadcasters to press ahead with the debates and provide an empty podium should you have a last minute change of heart.”

Despite the warning, Downing Street still sticks its stance that any multi-party format must include the Green Party.

However, if the broadcasters would choose to host the debates without Mr Cameron then it would consequently imply an important principle that no party should be allowed to veto any broadcast report or debate by refusing to take part.
