Police have arrested a Crowmarsh Gifford man on Thursday over the suspicion of arson attacks following the breakout of three major fire blazes in south Oxfordshire of England, including at a council office building.

The Thames Valley Police have told the 47-year-old local man is currently in police custody, and no injuries were reported after the blazes.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue service had been called overnight to attend the three fires reported at a thatched property in Rokemarsh, a funeral parlor in Benson Lane, and a District Council office at Crowmarsh Gifford respectively. The 27 crews led a massive operation to control fire which was at its peak.

All the three fires broke out within minutes of each other during the early hours shortly after 3am.

Following the incident, a number of roads had been closed and the public were advised to avoid the area until further notice.

Police has said: “At this stage the police investigation is focusing on all three fires being linked and are believed suspicious.”

Chief Fire Officer for Oxfordshire County Council’s Fire and Rescue Service, David Etheridge has said: “These are on-going incidents and our firefighters are working hard to get the fires under control, with assistance from neighboring Fire and Rescue Services at the South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Council office fire.”

Major services of the South Oxfordshire District Council have been affected by the fire at its office.

According to a statement of a council spokesperson, saying: “There has been a major fire at South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Council’s building.

“We are putting our business continuity plan into place to make sure the effect on the most important services is kept to a minimum.”
