Leon BrittanFormer U.K. Home Secretary Leon Brittan has died last night at his home in London an age of 75 following a long battle with cancer.

A statement released from Lord Brittan’s family said: “As a family, we should like to pay tribute to him as a beloved husband to Diana and brother to Samuel, and a supportive and loving stepfather to Katharine and Victoria, and step-grandfather to their children.

“We also salute his extraordinary commitment to British public life as a Member of Parliament, Minister, Cabinet Minister, European Commissioner and Peer – together with a distinguished career in law, and latterly in business.

“Leon passed away last night at his home in London after a long battle with cancer. We shall miss him enormously.”

Lord Brittan was first elected as a Conservative MP for Cleveland and Whitby in 1974. He then served as home secretary in Margaret Thatcher’s government from 1983 to 1985 and became the youngest home secretary since Sir Winston Churchill.

During the recent times, the Tory peer was caught up in a high level cover-up row after lawmaker Simon Danczuk queried Lord Brittan’s failure to act on a dossier of paedophile ring involving Westminster senior figures during his tenure as home secretary.

Prime Minister David Cameron has paid tribute to the Tory legend and called Lord Brittan a “dedicated and fiercely intelligent public servant”.

Commons Leader and the present Richmond MP William Hague has called Brittan a “kind, assiduous and brilliant man”.

Lord Brittan’s family have told of organising a private funeral service just for family, and a memorial service will also be announced lately.
