Former Russian agent Alexander LitvinenkoA public inquiry into the death of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko, who died of drinking radioactive tea, during 2006 have unveiled that the victim blamed President Vladimir Putin for ordering his assassination.

A barrister representing Mr Litvinenko’s widow Marina, who demanded an inquest into her late husband’s death, has made shocking claims after calling the killing an act of ‘nuclear terrorism’.

On 1 Novermber 2006, Mr Litvinenko took tea at a London hotel with former Russian agents Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitri Kovtun. Afterwards, he was admitted to a north London hospital over complaining to feel unwell.

However, a probe into the matter revealed that the former Russian agent had consumed a fatal dose of polonium-210 hidden in a pot of tea which became cause of his death three weeks later.

The head of inquiry, Robin Tam QC has read ex-KGB spy’s statement from his London hospital death bed, saying: “You may succeed in silencing me but that silence comes at a price.

“You may succeed in silencing one man but the howl of protest from around the world will reverberate, Mr Putin, in your ears for the rest of your life.”

Ben Emmerson QC has told the court: “That murder was an act of unspeakable barbarism that inflicted on Sasha Litvinenko the most painful and lingering death imaginable.”

The inquest, which opened on Tuesday, also heard from Tam QC that thousands of members from innocent public were also exposed to the radiation and placed in danger during the incident.

Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov has refused to comment telephonically over Litvinenko’s statement as he said: “We don’t want to comment on this nonsense, we’ve been through that ten times already.”

The investigation is on-going.
