The 50th anniversary of former British Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill’s state funeral has been marked ceremoniously in London through organising several special events in honour on Friday.

The former leader, who is popular for leading Britain to victory during World War II, died on 24 January 1965 aged 90. He was buried six days later on 30 January 1965 and honoured with a full state funeral watched by millions of people around the world.

Late British leader was the only commoner of the 20th century to be accorded such an honour normally reserved for when a reigning king or queen dies.

The Havengore – the boat that carried the wartime leader’s coffin along The River Thames in 1965, has retraced its route today. The boat carried the Churchill family members from the Tower of London to Westminster where a wreath was thrown into the river as part of the commemorations.

Prime Minister David Cameron along with Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Labour leader Ed Miliband, laid wreaths at the Churchill statue following a service held at the Houses of Parliament.

A procession lead by MPs, also headed to St Mary’s Undercroft Chapel, which ended under Churchill Arch.

Churchill’s great-grandson Randolph Churchill and granddaughter Celia Sandys also laid a wreath at his statue in Parliament Square.

The Queen Elizabeth II will also pay tribute through laying flowers on the same memorial stone -dedicated by her on 19th September 1965 – in honour of Sir Churchill during a private ceremony at Westminster Abbey later in the evening.
