The Conservative Party has announced to have suspended its whip from former foreign secretary, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, pending an investigation by party disciplinary committee for cash-for-access allegations resulting from an undercover sting operation. Chair of parliamentary committee overseeing Britain’s intelligence agencies, Sir Malcolm, is one of the two senior parliamentarians secretly filmed by reporters posing as representatives of a made-up Hong Kong-based firm wanting to hire senior British politicians to join its advisory board.
According to the undercover operatives, veteran MP alleged to arrange “useful access” to every British ambassador in the world because of his status. Additionally, Labour’s former foreign secretary Jack Straw is accused of claiming to operate “under the radar” to use his influence to change European Union rules on behalf of a commodity firm which paid him £60,000 a year. However, both accused have denied all allegations and referred themselves to the Parliamentary Standards Commissioner.
Meanwhile, Mr Straw has announced to have suspended himself from the Labour Party as he fights to clear his name. Following a meeting between Sir Malcolm and Tory Chief Whip Michael Gove this morning, a Conservative source said that “the Conservative Party has suspended the whip from Sir Malcolm Rifkind – effective immediately.” It was added that “a disciplinary committee of the party will be convened to investigate his case.” Whereas, Mr Cameron declined to comment on the matter and explained that “I can’t interfere with anything as it is a matter for the committee and the House of Commons.”
