An anti-Islam protest by a German far-right group gathered approximately 375 people in Britain yesterday but it was sabotaged by an outpouring 2,000-strong crowd of counter-protesters. The Geman group, PEGIDA, has been able to bring large crowds in Germany against the alleged “Islamisation” of Europe, along with small demonstrations in Austria and Sweden.

According to the police in the city of Newcastle, northeast England, five men were arrested “for isolated incidents” including five men, aged between 17 and 54, charged for offences like assault, breach of the peace and for being drunk and disorderly. Police insisted both the PEGIDA march and the Newcastle Unites protests went smoothly. Currently, the city has called on extra police for assistance, which will also be used for the Premier League football match between Newcastle United and Aston Villa.

However, there were still some angry confrontations as officers kept the two protests apart. One officer confessed to a brief scuffle involving members of far-right groups which temporarily damaged PEGIDA’s PA system. Police Chief Superintendent, Laura Young, stated that “both demonstrations passed without any problems.” Whereas according to PEGIDA’s spokeswoman in Britain, Marion Rogers, the group was not racist or against Muslims but “It’s about integration. We are not anti-Islam. We are not here to split up any communities.” She stressed that “we’ve invited Muslims to join us against extremism, extremism of any kind. I don’t think it’s wrong to stand up to terrorism. Is that hate?”
