Several sources have confirmed that a former British Royal Marine, named Erik Scurfield, has become the first Briton to be killed while fighting against Sunni Islamist Islamic State militants in Syria. Erik Scurfield went to Syria privately and died due to a hit by a mortar shell on Monday while fighting alongside Kurdish YPG forces against Islamic State militants near Tal Hamis in northeast Syria.

British lawmaker, Dan Jarvis, has confirmed that the family of Scurfield, from Barnsley in northern England, had consulted him a few weeks ago about their son. He alleged that “tragically it appears their worst fears have been realized,” adding that “Erik was an experienced former Royal Marine who was horrified by the atrocities being carried out by ISIS (Islamic State). His family’s understanding was that he traveled to Syria hoping to provide medical and humanitarian support as an expert in battlefield medicine.”

The Kurds are repelling the Islamic State in northern Syria with help from the air strikes conducted by the US-led coalition along with the local rebel fighters. The al Qaeda offshoot, ISIS, has so far been able to capture large tracts of land along the border with Turkey. Britain’s Foreign Office has also confirmed the reports about the death and reiterated its warning for Britons to not to travel to the region. Jarvis stated that “there is an issue that needs to be addressed as Erik was certainly not the first person to travel to Syria to join forces resisting ISIS.”
