The U.K. has begun its countdown to the general election to be held on May 7, triggering the traditional name-calling era before the election. In light of Prime Minister David Cameron’s refusal to participate in a head-to-head TV debate with opposition leader Ed Miliband on Thursday, his rival parties have all jumped in to accuse Cameron of cowardice and “running scared.” The Labour Party leader, Miliband, alleged that “he is cowering from the public,” adding that “the British people deserve this debate. I’ll debate him any time, any place, anywhere.”

The coming election are anticipated to be the most unpredictable national election in decades and the parties have been discussing about the televised showdown for some weeks. According to the last comments by the Cameron’s staff, they gave their “final offer” on Thursday to debate organizers rather than a one-on-one debate with Miliband. The Conservative leader only agreed to a single, 90-minute contest involving at least seven party leaders. The proposed debate would take place before March 30, when the official election campaign kicks off.

Leader of the Liberal Democrats and Cameron’s junior partner in the ruling coalition, Nick Clegg, also spoke against Cameron’s decision and called it the “lofty pomposity of the Conservatives.” He stated that “they’re behaving as if they’re ordering a drink in the drawing room of Downton Abbey. It’s not for the Conservatives to start telling people how these debates are going to happen.” Clegg alleged that if Cameron was “too important or too busy” to defend the coalition’s record, he would be happy to debate Miliband himself.”
