Authorities have revealed the identity and the reason of the first of four teenage schoolgirls who fled from the U.K. to join hands with the Islamic State. It was explained that the 15-year-old Sharmeena Begum was radicalized by extremists following the death of her mother as she travelled to Syria in December, i.e. less than a year after suffering the trauma of the death of her mother from cancer.

In addition to Sharmeena, three of her close closest friends from Bethnal Green Academy in east London also followed her in February. Currently, Sharmeena is believed to be living in Raqqa, i.e. an Islamic State stronghold, along with 16-year-old Kadiza Sultana, 15-year-old Shamima Begum and 15-year-old Amira Abase. Sharmeena’s father, Mohammad Uddin, explained during an interview that he believed his daughter was radicalized by Islamic State recruiters through the internet. He acknowledged that her girl used to spend a lot of time on her iPhone but he only thought she was using social media to chat with her friends.

Consequently, Mr Uddin revealed that two women encouraged his daugher to join the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and took Sharmeena to Gatwick airport for a flight to Istanbul. Thereafter, he believes she made her way overland through Turkey to the Syrian border. Mr Uddin pointed out that “I feel angry about the people who encouraged her,” adding that “I think the police should monitor the internet more because it’s destroying lives. It’s not fair. Not only my daughter’s, but her three friends, and I don’t know how many more it has destroyed.”
