Shadow Chancellor, Ed Balls, is facing a sudden death of his political career today after losing his seat as an MP following a vote count which lasted nearly 12 hours. Aspirant Chancellor in a government led by Ed Miliband, Balls, found himself voted out of his Morley and Outwood constituency after 10 years as an MP. Overall last night was disastrous for the Labour party as it lost dozens of seats in Scotland and failed to prevent the Conservatives from gaining a majority.

Mr Balls was defeated by Conservative challenger, Andrea Jenkyns, by a sleek margin of 422 votes even after he asked for a recount in the early hours of this morning in a last-ditch bid to save his career. Once the recounting was done, the outspoken ex-MP snapped at the Tories, warning that the country would suffer under five more years of David Cameron’s leadership. Mr Balls stated that “any personal disappointment I have at this result is as nothing as compared to the sense of sorrow I have at the result Labour has achieved across the UK tonight in Scotland, as well as in England and in Wales, and the sense of concern I have about the future.”

Mr. Balls added that “we will now face a five years where questions will arise about the future of our Union, about whether we can stay as a member of the European Union and fight for jobs and investment, whether we can make sure we secure our National Health Service at a time when public spending is cut. ‘Those are real concerns to me and to many people across the United Kingdom.”
