First minister of Northern Ireland, 66-year-old Peter Robinson, has been admitted to hospital with a suspected heart attack. Sources confirm that he was initially taken to the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, on Monday morning and then transferred to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital (RVH) where he is undergoing tests. A statement from the hospital has alleged that “Mr. Robinson underwent a procedure this morning and is currently recovering in the RVH,” adding that “he and his family have requested the need for privacy from this point onwards.”

Having had served as first minister and DUP leader since 2008, Mr. Robinson succeeded lan Paisley in both roles. The DUP has stressed that the Robinson family’s privacy should be respected. In a tweet posted by Prime Minister David Cameron, he sent best wishes to Mr Robinson and wished him a speedy recovery. Whereas, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also sent her best wishes. Meanwhile, DUP deputy leader, Nigel Dodds, stated that “my understanding is that he took ill during the night and was taken to hospital,” adding that that “he is undergoing tests. It is very difficult to say at this stage what his current position is. Hopefully he will be back soon in his full job and will make a speedy recovery.”

In addition to that, other politicians who have wished Mr. Robinson good health and speedy recovery include Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams, Ulster Unionist leader Mike Nesbitt, SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell, TUV leader Jim Allister and Mr. Robinson’s Stormont colleague Peter Weir.
