David Cameron is reported to launch a fresh attack on benefits ‘complacency’ today as he plans to strengthen his resolve to have £12bn of welfare cuts. Reports claim that the PM will urge for a ‘lower welfare society’ just a day after his top ministers confirmed they have finally found the full total. This will provide a new counter-offensive to the recent London’s anti-austerity marches over the weekend that reportedly entailed 250,000 people.
George Osborne is anticipated to formally uncover the cuts in his emergency budget two weeks from now. Whereas, the PM is also anticipated to criticize the Labour party for creating a benefits ‘merry-go-round’. Addressing an audience in North West England, PM Cameron will reportedly say that there’s been a “tolerance of government failure” and an attitude that says problems are “too big” to solve.
PM is anticipated to stress that “there is what I would call a merry-go-round. People working on the minimum wage having that money taxed by the Government and then the Government giving them that money back – and more – in welfare.” He will pointed out that “again, it’s dealing with the symptoms of the problem – topping up low pay rather than extending the drivers of opportunity – helping to create well paid jobs in the first place.” Instead, Cameron will say that “we need to move from a low wage, high tax, high welfare society to a higher wage, lower tax, lower welfare society.”
