UK Prime Minister David Cameron has received sheer criticism for calling the migrants attempting to reach Britain from Calais, France, a “swarm”. In response to a query about the situation, Cameron stated that “a swarm of people coming across the Mediterranean, seeking a better life, wanting to come to Britain.” Labour Party’s Harriet Harman has condemned these remarks and pointed out that “he should remember he is talking about people and not insects” and called the use of “divisive” language a “worrying turn”.

Last night, hundreds of migrants tried to enter the Channel Tunnel overnight while over thousands have made attempts over the week. Overall in the month, nine people have been killed while trying to cross the Channel. During his tour of South East Asia, Mr Cameron warned that illegal immigrants would be removed from the UK, stressing that Britain would not become a “safe haven” for migrants in Calais. Cameron highlighted that the French authorities have deployed an additional 120 police to the French port and the UK was investing in fencing and security measures too.

Mr Cameron alleged that “everything that can be done will be done to make sure our borders are secure and make sure that British holidaymakers are able to go on their holidays.” He confessed that the situation in Calais was “very testing,” and added that “I accept that, because you have got a swarm of people coming across the Mediterranean, seeking a better life, wanting to come to Britain because Britain has got jobs, it’s got a growing economy, it’s an incredible place to live.”
