Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has confirmed that a 19-year-old London law student, Vivian Chan, is among the 22 victims killed by a bomb attack on a shrine in Bangkok. Chan is believed to have travelled to the country with a friend who was also killed in the blast.

Consequently, Britain has offered to help Thai investigators hunt down the prime suspect for the attack who is believed to be a man disguised as a tourist. A video confirms that the suspect left a backpack at the shrine shortly before the explosion. In his remarks, Mr. Hammond explained that “the loss of life and injury in Bangkok is horrific and I condemn this callous act of violence against completely innocent and unsuspecting members of the public.” He added that “I can confirm that one British national, a resident of Hong Kong, lost her life in the attack. British Embassy staff in Thailand are assisting her family at this very difficult time.” Mr. Hammond stated that “my thoughts are with the victims, their families and loved ones, and with the Thai people.”

Whereas on the other hand, Ms Chan’s friends from the Thai Society at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) have claimed to be “deeply saddened” by her death and mentioned in a statement that “we… are deeply saddened to hear the news of Miss Chan ‘Vivian’ Wing-Yan, who passed away yesterday after a bomb blast in central Bangkok.” It was stated that “we would like to send our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends during this difficult moment.”
