The British government has announced to introduce new laws that will crack down on illegal migrants working in the country and punish them with jail time and seize their earnings. The government mentioned on Tuesday that it will now amplify its anti-immigration measures to take on the spike in migrant attempts to reach Britain via the Channel Tunnel in France.

Mayor of the northern French port city of Calais, Natacha Bouchart, previously blamed Britain’s generous welfare system and lax identity controls for making it a magnet for illegal migrants. However, immigration minister, James Brokenshire, has recently stressed that “anyone who thinks the UK is a soft touch should be in no doubt, if you are here illegally, we will take action to stop you from working, renting a flat, opening a bank account or driving a car,” adding that “we will continue to crack down on abuse and build an immigration system that works in the best interests of the British people and those who play by the rules.”

The British government has vowed to pass the legislation when parliament returns from the break in September. The new legislation would make it an offence to work illegally and punish the lawbreakers by carrying a jail term of up to six months and an unlimited fine. Additionally, wages of illegal immigrants will also be seized. Moreover, the new measures will also target employers who knowingly hire workers with no permission to work in Britain as their punishment would be increased from two years jail sentence to five years.
