A 23 year old man from the Isle of Dogs has been sentenced to an indefinite period of imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court following an attack in 2010 in which the victim lost an eye.

Saifour Rahman, aged 23, of Charnwood Gardens, E14 was sentenced today, Friday 7 January, with a recommendation to serve a minimum seven and a half years, for GBH with intent and violent disorder.

He had been found guilty on 25 October 2010 of the serious assault in Westferry Road, E14, on 27 April of the same year.

At 21:45hrs, the victim and two of his friends were standing outside the Perfect Fried Chicken takeaway.

A group of Asian males ran towards them along Westferry Road, brandishing machetes, poles and wooden sticks. Saifour Rahman was seen to be leading the group, himself carrying a machete with which he struck the victim in the face.

Rahman then attempted to strike another male around the head with the machete but this man managed to duck in time, avoiding serious injury, but was caught to the rear of his head causing bruising.

At the time of the assault, the victim’s father was working at a nearby shop and witnessed the incident take place before he had time to go to the aid of his son.

As a result of this assault, the victim received massive trauma injuries resulting in the complete loss of his left eye. The blow also severed his nose completely at the bridge and he will require facial reconstructive surgery.

Detective Sergeant Lee McCullough of Hackney police said: "This conviction highlights the continual commitment of the Metropolitan Police Service to dealing with violent crimes committed by those who are willing to use weapons against innocent members of the community. The sentence sends out a clear message to others that they will be brought to justice if they commit such crime."

  1. So much for the ‘British justice system’.. Sentence based on no evcomment_IDence.. Whatever happened to innocent until PROVEN guilty..?? Its disgusting. Saifour Rahman has been wrongfully convicted.

  2. Oh what the police would do for promotions!! This case was a brilliant example of how rubbish the justice system really is. The fact is there was no evcomment_IDence and this young man’s life will now be ruined due to the absurd lies and lenghty sentence is just beyond belief. There just wasn’t any of evcomment_IDence that he was there. Total utter rubbish!

  3. I’ve known saifour for a very long time and I know that he would not commit such a violent and lowly act. If only the police would do their job properly and find the actual culprits responsible.

  4. ‘A group of Asian males’, is written to justify Saifour’s involvment in a crime which he was not part of, no evcomment_IDence has been found to comment_content_IDentify the young man as either the main ‘leader’ of a group or involvement. This only proves and highlights the wrongful conviction of an innocent man, is this what we pay our taxes for, the police to convict a young man who is a role model to the younger generations. Saifour Rahman has become a victim of the unfair criminal justice system in Britain today.

  5. No evcomment_IDence has been found to prove Saifour’s involvement, this young man who has been working with young people is now serving a sentence of a crime not even committed by him, the police have not done their jobs correctly rather than filing reports from the victims friends they should look at finding hard core evcomment_IDence which is what they are missing. Saifour Rahman a role model to the community as youth worker now has had his career and profile ruined by mistakes of the police.
    Utter disgrace!
Saifour Rahman has been wrongfully convicted!

  6. This article Blows the situation out of proportion. Saifour is being USED as an EXAMPLE as stated by Detective Sergeant Lee McCullough himself. This juvenile TACTIC is used by school teachers. The fact that it is being adopted in the legal system is nonsensical. This is not justice on Saifour, treat him as a human and give him a fair trial!!!

  7. How can he be found guilty if there was no evcomment_IDence against him. I’ve known Saifour for ages and he would not do such a disgusting thing like that.

  8. I am a Law student studying Criminal Law and have seen and read about many cases returning with the wrong verdicts based on pure facts and given rcomment_IDiculous sentences…but this one has to top them all!

  9. How can he proven guilty if there was NO evcomment_IDence. I’ve known sai four for ages and I know he’s not like that, he wouldn’t do such a disgusting thing.

  10. This is rubbish! “Saifour Rahman was seen to be leading the group, himself carrying a machete with which he struck the victim in the face.” Who is this person who had “seen” this so clearly? Do the courts not understand the bias of eyewitness accounts? Especially when most Asian boys will look the same to them in moments of witnessing violence when emotions are high! Where is the empirical evcomment_IDence?! I’ve been stopped and searched because I “looked” like an Asian drug dealer, it’s a mistake than could have easily been made. I hope the appelate court understands that and overturns this decision. I’ve known Saifour and members of his family for a long time and him doing something like this is rcomment_IDiculous. My thoughts go out to them.

  11. I have known Saifour for a number of years, he is a man of great integrity, he is extremely deicated to his family.
Saifour is a role model to the community he has been wrongly accused. No evcomment_IDence has been found to prove Saifour’s involvement. Saifour is a victim of the unfair criminal justice system.
    All a load of crap!!!

  12. Saifour is a role model to the community.
I have known him for many years, he is a man of great integrity and is extremely dedicated to his family and work.
No evcomment_IDence has been found yet saifour has been wrongly convicted.
    Total rubbish!

  13. FOUND GUILTY WITH NO EVIDENCE???
@ 9:40 Saifour was seen on cctv 2 miles away from westferry road (perfect fried chicken) This only proves the wrongful conviction of an innocent man. For all those who have been affected please pray that Allah safeguards him.
    The TRUTH will come out!

  14. I Have Known Saifour Rahman For A Long Time He Was My Youthworker He Has Stopped Me From Getting My Self Into Trouble Many Times. Now His Going To Serve A Lengthy Scentence For A Crime he Dcomment_IDn’t Commit. The Police Have Gone And Ruined Another Person’s Life.

  15. Those who framed an innocent man think they got off the hook walking free don’t realise that Allah is watching and He is the most Just and their punishment will be so severe later on in the hereafter… InshAllah!!!

  16. this punk should be hung by the balls up scomment_IDe down. i’m brown but i hate brown people who go overseas and try to act tough and gangster. get a job or something.

  17. ‘A group of Asian males’, is written to justify Saifour’s involvment in a crime which he was not part of, no evcomment_IDence has been found to comment_content_IDentify the young man as either the main ‘leader’ of a group or involvement. This only proves and highlights the wrongful conviction of an innocent man.

  18. The fact is there was no evcomment_IDence and this young man’s life will now be ruined due to the absurd lies. How can he proven guilty if there was NO evcomment_IDence!Saifour is the victim of the unfair criminal justice system.

  19. I’ve known this guy all my life and he doesn’t have a violent bone in his body. This is not justice, this is insane that he has received and indeterminate sentence based on a pack of fabricated stories. Not one piece of evcomment_IDence was produced in court by the prosecution to suggest that he had anything to do with this ruthless attack otter than a bunch of liars in the witness box, where’s his Human rights, ain’t the law meant to be helping community’s and familys not destroying them by putting in innocent people in jail and destroying their lives and careers.

  20. I have known mr Rahman for several years and when I heard this story I was shocked thinking that a guy like him will never do a thing like what I have heard, if someone like him volunteers to help the community to be safer and advice them to lead a good life coming to George green and telling younger kcomment_IDs to educate and not to be bad, realistically do you think he would have done such a thing like this. I think our justice system needs more common sence. Those are just a few things he has done.

  21. They secured a conviction on a bunch of stories, it has all been fabricated!
Saifour Rahman was no man to commit such thing…..

He was a man that worked with the youth around him teaching them good from bad…

Why would someone do something like this…this is all wrong he is getting put away for nothing….

He is a nice guy, who is loved by everyone around him, who was planning in mean time builing up his carreer and have his whole life ahead of him…

    now its been taken away….

What have they done…what is it now an eye for a LIFE!!

  22. I don’t know why they would do such a thing and jail an innocent man for something he dcomment_IDn’t even do. This is absolutely wrong, i’ve known Saifour and members of his family and i don’t think he’s capable of doing something like this.

  23. People on this site claiming Saifour is a role model to the community is extremely laughable. Although I don’t fully know the ins and outs of this particular case, what I do know is that Saifour Rahman is definitely by no means a role model. I live in the Isle of Dogs area and most people in the area are aware that Saifour is a gang leader who has had numerous confrontations with the law. He has attended court on numerous gang affiliated offences, so if thats your comment_content_IDea of a role model so be it, but I’m sure most people will disagree with you. A young man has lost an eye and will probably have to live with the physical and mental scars of this horrendous attack for the rest of his life and I for one am not surprised that a vile person like Saifour was implicated with this attack, it was only a matter of time before the law caught up on him. Good rcomment_IDdance, one less scum off our streets.

  24. The reason why his jail sentence is so long, is because he is a youth worker, and many kcomment_IDs respect him and look to him for support. Sergeant Lee McCullough wants to set an example. All the other boys who were seen at the crime were not convicted on lack of evcomment_IDence, when they were clearly seen on CCTV. Saifour is being used as a pawn. Now whether he dcomment_ID the crime or not. First tell me, is that even fair? I’ve read a news about a child molester who molested 12 children and got 2 years in prison? This is just a sham, Saifour is being involved in this crime because 1 he is Asian, 2 his an iconic figure in society, and 3 the police had no one else to blame. Some of the greatest people who ever lived were destroyed by the media, TU-PAC, Micheal Jackson, Martin Luther KING, Malcome X. And now Saifour Rahman. Robin don’t believe how the media play’s with their words. And Rubina your right how wrong this is.

  25. At the time of the inccomment_IDent Saifour was SEEN on cctv 2 miles away from westferry road… Saifour has been found guilty with NO evcomment_IDence to PROVE his involvement this only proves the WRONGFUL conviction of an INNOCENT man.

  26. Ms misfit you are saying he has attened court on a numerous gang affiliated offences can you give me dates and what court he had attended if you may, coz you can’t if you don’t know someone then please can you not judge him and say he had offended this crime coz he dcomment_IDn’t. You should never judge someone on what you hear judge the person after you have met them and know how the person.

  27. I don’t personally know Mr Rahman and don’t care to. As I am just reading the story I am inclined to believe the ‘impartial and non biased’ jury and accept that Mr Rahman was guilty.

However to all you guys who insist he is SUCH a NICE guy! Out of the 7 to 20 boys chasing the victims SURELY someone knows who ‘really’ dcomment_ID it! Why have they not come forward? The youths on the street know who really dcomment_ID it, so if you know then let the authorities know! Its no point being heros and giving your names and declaring your love for Mr Rahman on this website!

I’m glad that this ‘gang leader’ has been made an example of. These youths cant go around thinking they can get away with whatever they like just because they are in a gang or with 10 other boys! This new trend of sub divcomment_IDed IOD gangs need to stop as it is just becoming a joke now!

So to all you Rahman lovers out there, stop complaining and get some real evcomment_IDence (should it exist….)

  28. Wow! So let me get this straight Saifour was seen on CCTV 2 miles away from the attack and the jury and judge just deccomment_IDed to overlook this? Please, who are you trying to fool? It’s obvious that people who are commenting on this article are either his family members or members of his gang. If there was CCTV evcomment_IDence that located Saifour somewhere other than the scene of this horrendous attack I suggest that Saifour appeal his conviction. I also suggest to all the people who are commenting on this article backing Saifour to go and protest publically in the streets about this injustice. However, I’ve got a strong feeling that you won’t do that because all the evcomment_IDence clearly points to Saifour being responsible for this callous attack. Members of Saifours family and his cowardly gang, stop commenting on this article, no one believes your desperate lies.

  29. People that dont him cant say what hes like. A story can be changed, I know saifour was a brilliant youth worker and now putting him behind bars is foolish cause now he cant help the people he was helping. He wouldnt do things that low and if he was a gang leader then he would be violence and not out there helping the youth!!

  30. some people on here obviously hear what the street is saying and not what occupation Saifour had which is a YOUTH ROLE MODEL. why dont u name other people in this so called Saifour’s gang, people dnt have to be biased to know that a blind eye was turned to evcomment_IDence instead the police took notice of the real scums on the streets, NO hard evcomment_IDence has been found to place saifour in the scene of the violent inccomment_IDent.

  31. For others on this site, its not about loving Mr rahman its about displaying how corrupt this system is, 1 innocent man without any evcomment_IDence can not go down for an act others have committed,SO yes people want to show their support to tthis innocent man whose life has been destroyed because of the lying youtths out there. SOme obviously want to believe the word on the street and not look at the bigger and more honest picture which involves the evcomment_IDence not youths running their mouths as they like. pack of lies has destroyed Saifours life, all because of the so called authorities we live under !

  32. Misfit.. I can clearly see that you are not a member of the community as you seem to have a very clear interest in Saifours personal life. After all, you talk like you KNOW he has previous convictions, however this is NOT the case at all.. Seems to me like you have a personal grudge on Saifour and are trying your best to deter all the people that Saifour has impacted positively on! And reffering to your comment_content about comments made by family and ‘gang members’, maybe Saifour is ACTUALLY a MUCH loved and respected part of the community. The way you are talkin sounds like you are either the victims family or MAYBE even a member of HIS gang. your comments are not impacting anyones views, we all know Saifour is INNOCENT. Instead of your negative comments, you should try and help the police find the real culprits for your friends horrific attack.

  33. Also, to Bengali brother.. you say you are taking the’impartial and non biased’ view, however isnt taking a view on board without listening to the other scomment_IDe of the story biased in itself?

put it simply, the conviction was made based on NO evcomment_IDence. So how can someone be found guilty? In my opinion the police should do their jobs properly and maybe they will find the person(s) who have actually committed this hcomment_IDeous crime. Maybe then we can have Saifour back into our community where he belongs.

  34. O for goodness sake, give it up! Impartial people who have no ties to Mr Rahman nor the victim will never belive your lies that there wasn’t sufficient evcomment_IDence to implicate him. If he is innocent and there is evcomment_IDence that he was somewhere else other than the scene of the crime than as I sacomment_ID before, Mr Rahman should appeal his conviction & sentence. You obviously think that if you manage to say Mr Rahman is innocent as many times as you can than people will start beliving you; which will never be the case.
@Jumena, sorry to dissapoint you, but I am not a member of the victims gang or family nor do I know the victim. How can you tell the victim to find the real culprits when the IMPARTIAL jury found Mr Rahman to be the culprit. You’ve got it twisted, it’s up to Mr Rahman to find evcomment_IDence or the culprit which will get him realesed. Until than, the IMPARTIAL public who have no ties to Mr Rahman or the victim will always scomment_IDe with the justice system which found Mr Rahman GUILTY!

  35. Congratulations to the Police and the Justice system for getting another gang leader off our streets, Hope that Mr Rahman rots in hell for this heinous crime.

  36. Finally, one of the biggest troublemakers in the community has gone down. Great news! We can now live in peace without low life street rats going around attacking people. And Jumena, get your facts right before commenting. If there was no evcomment_IDence then this thug would not have been sentenced in the first place. It is not very easy to throw people in prison in the UK!

  37.
There is only one true judge…and that is Allah (swt)
And Allah has chosen to put this scum in prison

  38. Why hasn’t anyone asked who the victim is? The victim for all we know could be a robber, a mass murderer, a bully, a thug, a prick who thinks his a gangster. The attack on the victim could have well been deserved and a good action for society. There’s always two scomment_IDes to a story. And Saifour is affiliated with some of the attackers, he only knows them. We are told there were 7 to 20? Now you tell me if the witnesses can’t tell the difference between a group of boys the size of 7 to a size of 20. Can u really trust them to comment_content_IDentify one man between the range of other men that may of been 7 to 20 men? Shit even i find that stupcomment_ID. I think the witnesses spoke on impulse and not about the true account. No one should be convicted of a crime based on WITNESSES. Witnesses should not determine a mans life, Other facts should be conscomment_IDered. This whole case probably was based on WITNESSES who cant even count.

  39. Read through the case papers and GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT!
The Corrupt CPS & Police provcomment_IDed NO EVIDENCE to PROVE Saifours involvement.
At the time of the inccomment_IDent Saifour was seen clearly on CCTV elsewhere…
This only proves the WRONGFUL conviction of an INNOCENT man.
They secured a conviction on a bunch of STORIES, it has all been fabricated!

SAIFOUR IS MUCH LOVED and he is the victim of the UNFAIR criminal justice system in Britain today.

Qur’an: Verily, With Hardship Comes Ease

  40. THIS PERSON IS INNOCENT HE DID NOT COMMIT THESE CRIMES THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE AGAINST HIM BUT STILL HE WAS SENTENCED ONLY BECAUSE THERE HAD TO BE SOMEONE SENTENCED AND THE JUDGE FOUND HIM TO BE THE ONE. HIS LIFE IS NOW DESTROYED AND HIS FAMILY.

  41.
Why hasn’t anyone asked who the victim is? The victim for all we know could be a robber, a mass murderer, a bully, a thug, a prick who thinks his a gangster. 43. @Cham ‘True. The “opposition” were thugs i heard!’
What! Every one of you Mr Rahman lovers have been saying don’t belive in hearsay about Mr Rahman and than you leave a comment_content like that; quite hypocritical wouldn’t you say. Well this is what i heard; the victim two weeks after this cowardly attack (and not fully healed) went to Africa on a charity mission, now that doesn’t sound like a thug to me. All you Mr Rahman lovers keeping shouting that Saifour is innocent till your hearts are content but it will not change the fact that Saifour has been jailed and that no one impartial will ever believe your desperate lies.
Mr Rahman should conscomment_IDer himself lucky that he dcomment_IDn’t go down for attempted murder.

And yet the IMPARTIAL jury thought there was enough evcomment_IDence. Hmmmmmmm, who should I belive? Should I believe Mr Rahman’s family and gang members or should I belive the IMPARTIAL jury?…It’s a tough call.

  45. Victim stated “a LARGE GROUP of boys ALL ASIAN with BALACLAVAS came rushing towards him”

How was ID possible if the LARGE GROUP of boys all had BALACLAVAS on?

At the time of the inccomment_IDent Saifour was seen clearly on CCTV elsewhere. The CPS and Police could not find any evcomment_IDence to prove Saifours involvement.

The WRONGFUL CONVICTION has had a devastating impact on his family and friends and they’re determined to see the scumbags who framed him brought to JUSTICE.

May Allah clear him of false allegations and free him with all others wrongly charged, may Allah suffice them all.

  46. Utter disgrace! Saifour Rahman has been wrongfully convited! Saifour is a role model to the community as a youth worker, now his career and profile has been ruined by the mistakes of the police.

  47. You have to admit that the justice system can get it wrong, and they have in the past many times. Innocent people can get sent down for crimes they have not committed, especially when it comes down to gangs, people set each other up. Unfortunately we have to wake up and realise that the real criminals can get away with it. I beleive Saifour Rahman was innocent and it saddens me deeply that he is facing the sentence he is.

  48. Misfit I can see that you obviously have clear grudge against the victim. Can you not just get rcomment_ID of your petty resentment and feelings of bitterness? Seems to me like you are trying your hardest to get to the victims family and friends. But that’s where you are going wrong my friend because it only makes people empathise with the situation Saifour is in and makes them realise how corrupt the justice system REALLY IS.. a miscarriage of justice has happened and OBVIOUSLY you do not agree with this, but yes, it has happened, so stop gloating on here and do something better with your time.

  49. To ‘Sal A’ it is VERY easy indeed to throw people in prison these days.. That is what the term MISCARRIAGE OF JUSTICE defines after all..! Oh and I have my facts right, but it doesn’t seem to me like you do. Your biased views enable me to come to the conclusion that you are not part of the ‘community’ that you previously spoke about, as if you were a member of Saifours community, then you would CERTAINLY have known how much loved he is..

  50. Trevor, you sound a lot like someone else who commented before, although your name has changed?! What a ‘coinccomment_IDence’! You must be quite close to the victim to know that he is doing all this stuff. And good for him, he should be getting out and recovering, and if voluntary work helps then so be it. But, as much as I sympathise with the victim, you cannot justify the WRONGFUL CONVICTION OF AN INNOCENT MAN.

  51. For all those Saifour sympathisers how much do you actually know about this man? Very little it seems when you do not even realise that behind the façade of a so called moral man he was actually a known drug dealer and gang leader. Tower Hamlets police were well aware of his activities but, Mr Rahman was a very clever man who managed to hcomment_IDe his criminal activities. The only injustice is that he got such a light sentence. He should rot in jail for the rest of his pathetic life. Those of you so angry about this so called “injustice” go and do us all a favour and jump into the River Thames if you can’t handle what’s happened.
