Several senior Labour MPs have spoken against a new campaign group supported by Jeremy Corbyn, called Momentum, as they refer to it as a “threat to sitting MPs” and anticipate that it will “undermine” the party. The group, which enjoys the support of the Labour leader and the Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell, is tasked to influence party policy. However, sitting MPs of the party have called it the beginning of a purge of moderate members who are not very supportive of the new leader.

According to a Shadow Cabinet Minister, “they are setting up a party within a party and I fear that they will use it to take control of conference, policy-making and mount a purge.” Whereas, a MP mentioned on the condition of anonymity that the new group is “a worrying sign.” Moreover, Labour MP Stephen Pound has openly exclaimed that “this is basically a parallel organisation as far as I’m concerned, it’s against the principles of the Labour party and I think less of Jeremy Corbyn for endorsing it.” Adding that “it will inevitably be seen as a threat to sitting MPs and the Labour party in parliament – it is a retrograde step.”

On the contrary, Mr. Corbin addressed the group yesterday and stated that “now, more than ever, we need to unite and continue to build our movement to change our politics and to win together in 2020.” In addition to Mr. Corbin, other supporters of the group include Katy Clark, Clive Lewis, Richard Burgon, Rebecca Long-Bailey and Kate Osamor.
