The head of UK’s Environment Agency, Sir Philip Dilley, is finally returning to the country after spending the holidays in the Caribbean amid growing criticism regarding his absence in the ongoing flood situation of the country. Earlier, the agency had ignored the question of Sir Philip Dilley’s absence following reports he was at his luxury home on Barbados but it has recently released a statement explaining that he was spending Christmas on the island with his family and will be back soon.

The official statement issued by the agency on Tuesday said that “he is keeping in regular touch with the Environment Agency on its response to the current flooding, and available to participate in any necessary discussions.” It was added that “he has been in Barbados, where his family are from, and we’re expecting him back in the UK in the next 24 hours.” A former executive chairman of the global design and professional services firm Arup, Dilley, earns £100,000 a year and spends two to three days a week in his role.

Sir Dilley’s predecessor, Chris Smith, faced sheer criticism last year for failing to visit flood-hit Somerset soon enough. Thereafter, when Sir Dilley took over as the agency’s chairman in September last year, he promised to visit the scene of any serious flooding in the UK soon. He assured to have learned from the misfortune of Smith and vowed that “I chair the board of the agency and I agree there is a sort of figurehead position that is crucial for perception.”
