poland to cautiously support cameron’s eu renegotiation planUK Prime Minister David Cameron has garnered support for his EU renegotiation plan from his Polish counterpart on Friday as in the start of his tour to gather support for his proposal before the EU summit. In a press conference held in Warsaw, Mr. Cameron and his Polish counterpart, Beata Szydło, avoided referring to the controversial benefits for EU migrants in Britain probably because of the estimated 1.3m Poles living in the UK.

In his second visit to Poland in two months, Cameron hinted of offering Poland military help in return for its support for a deal to keep Britain in the EU. Next on his tour, Cameron will see the Danish prime minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, in Copenhagen. During the press briefing in Warsaw, Szydło and Cameron did not take any questions from journalists but only focused on what they described as a new “strategic partnership” between the two countries, with a focus on securing Nato’s eastern flank.

In his remarks, Cameron stressed that “I agree that Britain is better off in a reformed EU. We want to make sure that our two countries’ cooperation is as close as possible. We want to see a full strategic partnership in the EU and in Nato … to secure Nato’s eastern flank.” The talks between the two prime minister is being largely followed because Poland is most likely to be the largest national group to be affected by the “emergency brake” on claiming full in-work benefits for up to four years, i.e. the proposal put forward by the UK.
