Belfast police and Army Technical Officers are currently attending a suspicious object found in Lagmore Drive beside the Christ the Redeemer Primary School in west Belfast today (March 7). A security alert was issued and Army Technical Officers were dispatched to the scene soon after the first report at 9am, which also prompted immediate evacuation of the school.
According to local witnesses, “police advise that some classes have been evacuated to the hall as a precaution,” and “we have been liaising with the school and PSNI (Police Service of Northern Ireland) to limit disruption. Police have part of the area cordoned off.” Meanwhile, a PSNI spokesperson revealed to the Daily Star Online that “the suspicious object has been located close to the primary school Christ the Redeemer on Lagmore Drive,” adding that “Lagmore Drive has been closed and a number of properties including the primary school have been evacuated. Police and ATO are examining the object.”
Upon inquiry if police thinks the incident is linked to reports of suspicious devices being found across Belfast over the weekend, the spokesman answered that “it would be far, far, too early to say.” However, it was pointed out that authorities are not ruling anything out anything and they believe terrorists could launch a devastating city attack to mark the 1916 Easter Rising centenary. A prison officer cheated death on Friday when a bomb – which the New IRA claimed responsibility for – partially exploded a van in the Northern Ireland capital.
