mother jailed for 24 yrs after beating daughter ayeeshia to deathThe judge has jailed the drug-addict mother of 21-month-old Ayeeshia Jane Smith, Kathryn Smith, for life with a minimum term of 24 years for beating the little one to death.  Smith was trialed and convicted of murder last week, whereas her ex-partner Matthew Rigby was found guilty of allowing the girl’s death and jailed for a three-and-a-half-year today.

New revelations were made after the girl’s biological father and family members unveiled the mystery surrounding the youngster’s ashes as they were desperate to find them so they can lay her to rest. The family spokesman, Robert Wade, flanked by Ayeeshia’s father Ricky Booth, said Smith had been given the ashes by the undertaker after her cremation and the killer has not revealed where they are.

In his remarks, Mr Wade explained that “now that the case is over, Ms Smith will be facing a prison sentence and we have no idea where the ashes are at all and we would like them returned so that the family can finally lay [Ayeeshia] to rest.” Meanwhile, judge Geraldine Andrews mentioned in the remarks that “for or no apparent reason her life was snuffed out by a brutal beating in her bedroom surrounded by her toys,” adding that “Ayeeshia was a particularly vulnerable victim, thin and slight of frame, deserving of protection and under the protection of social services for the whole of her short life. She was killed in her own home by her own mother – that is the grossest breach of trust.”
