U.S. President Barack Obama has urged British people to remain in the European Union on Friday as he stressed that the membership had magnified Britain’s place in the world. Obama highlighted that a British exit would weaken the West but their staying in will make it stronger.
On his arrival in London, Obama commended Britain’s EU membership and alleged that it had helped make the world freer, richer and better able to tackle everything from Russian aggression to terrorism. Addressing the British people about the EU vote, Obama recalled the combined history of the two countries and the tens of thousands of Americans lying in European war graves for his justification to speak as “a friend” on the June 23 referendum. In an article published by Daily Telegraph newspaper, Obama is quoted as saying that “the European Union doesn’t moderate British influence – it magnifies it,” stressing that “as your friend, I tell you that the EU makes Britain even greater.” He explained that “the United States sees how your powerful voice in Europe ensures that Europe takes a strong stance in the world, and keeps the EU open, outward looking, and closely linked to its allies on the other side of the Atlantic”.
During his visit, Obama is expected to meet U.S. embassy personnel and families before a lunch at Windsor Castle with Queen Elizabeth, who celebrated her 90th birthday on Thursday, and her husband Prince Philip. Later, Obama will meet with Prime Minister David Cameron and hold a news conference afterwards.
