uk votes to leave eu, cameron decides to quit soonUK Prime Minister David Cameron has announced that he will resign from his position by October in light of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union. Cameron confessed that the country needed a “fresh leadership” after it decided against the Prime Minister’s campaign to vote Remain and was defeated by 52% to 48% despite London, Scotland and Northern Ireland backing staying in.

Whereas on the other hand, the decision was hailed as the UK’s “independence day” by UKIP leader Nigel Farage and Boris Johnson clarified that the result would not mean “pulling up the drawbridge”. More importantly, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon stressed that she is “absolutely determined” to keep Scotland in the EU and hence a push for a second Scottish independence referendum was now “highly likely”. Meanwhile, German chancellor Angela Merkel expressed “great regret” at the outcome, and EU chiefs said they expected the UK to begin negotiations to leave “as soon as possible, however painful that process may be”.

The ex-London mayor who was the public face of Vote Leave and is now therefore a frontrunner to be next Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, claims that there is “no need for haste” about severing the UK’s ties. He mentioned that voters had “searched in their hearts” and the UK now had a “glorious opportunity” to pass its own laws, set its own taxes and control its own borders. Whereas another Leave campaigner, Labour’s Gisela Stuart stated that the UK would be a “good neighbour” when it left the EU.
