thousands march in london against brexitTens of thousands of people have begun a march in London to protest against the vote to leave the EU. Organizers plan to go from Park Lane through Pall Mall and Whitehall to Parliament Square. Comedian Mark Thomas organized the ‘The March For Europe’ demonstration through social media, where he mentioned that he wanted to express his “anger, frustration and need to do something”.

According to Mr Thomas, “we would accept the result of the referendum if it was fought on a level playing field. But it was full of misinformation and people need to do something with their frustration.” Analysts have anticipated that the crowd will reach up to 40,000 people. Some protesters, using the Twitter handle @wewantbackin, said they are handing out banners and megaphones. Flags bearing the EU circle of stars, along with banners bearing slogans that include: “EU & me always & forever”.

One of the protestors who joined from Islington, 59-year-old Bill Baker, came to the march with his 22-year-old daughter Jess. Mr Baker explained that “we didn’t want to leave but if you respect the decision of the referendum, which we should, we still want Britain to be EU orientated, outward looking and inclusive.” Another attendee who was seven months pregnant, 34-year-old Genevieve Parke, marched carrying an EU flag with her two-year-old son Ernest. Mrs Parke stated that “leaving the EU will have a polarising effect on communities at home again.” “I don’t want to go back to a border with guns and checkpoints. That will bring back a lot of horrible memories for people, if nothing else.”
