points-based immigration controls ruled out by pm mayIn her first ever firm stance on the tough question of how to tighten border controls with the EU, British Prime Minister Theresa May has straight-forwardly rejected a “points-based” system to screen immigrants. The decision might enrage the Brexit campaigners and put her government in conflict with them as they promised to bring in Australian-style controls over EU migrants during the campaign.

Even though May voted against Brexit, she has vowed to deliver on the June 23 referendum vote by steering Britain out of the bloc. In her remarks, May explained that “points-based” systems are difficult to manage and there was no “silver bullet” on immigration. May agrees that there is need for better controls over immigration but she has yet to say how they will work. Perhaps one of the key issue in the discussion is to try and keep future British access to the European market during the negotiations with the EU.

Addressing reporters after a two-day summit of leaders from G20 nations in China, May explained on Monday that “what the British people voted for on the 23rd of June was to bring some control into the movement of people from the European Union to the UK.” She concluded that “points-based system does not give you that control,” and continued that “I want a system where the government is able to decide who comes into the country. I think that’s what the British people want.” It remains to be seen if Britain is able to convince EU to keep the free-trade deal even after Brexit but so far 27 EU countries have stressed that it cannot enjoy full trade benefits unless it continues to let in EU nationals as before.
