former pm cameron also resigns as mpFormer Prime Minister of the UK, David Cameron, has announced to leave his seat as MP also after he resigned from the top job earlier in July. Remaining away from the public eye since his departure from Downing Street, Cameron announced today that he will also step down from his position in Parliament and put an end to his political career.

The surprise announcement on Monday will trigger a byelection in the county of Witney in Oxfordshire, which 49-year-old Cameron won in 2015 general election. Cameron decided to resign from the top job after British voters rejected his pleas and decided to leave the European Union. However, he kept his place in the parliament at the time but now he has announced that it makes more sense for him to leave public office altogether. Cameron stated that “in my view, the circumstances of my resignation as prime minister and the realities of modern politics make it very difficult to continue on the backbenches without the risk of becoming a diversion to the important decisions that lie ahead for my successor in Downing Street and the Government.”

In his remarks, Cameron stated that he fully supports Theresa May as the new PM and wishes her good luck in carrying out the voters’ mandate to extricate Britain from the 28-nation EU bloc. Meanwhile, May also praised Cameron and alleged that that she is proud to have served in Cameron’s government and that government had accomplished great things under his leadership.
