ASSOCHAM has estimated that the disaster that hit the coast of Chennai on Monday, Cyclone Vardah, has caused damages worth up to $1 billion to the industries. The secretary general of ASSOCHAM, D S Rawat, explained that the hurricane-strength storm uprooted trees, overturned cars and caused extensive damage to buildings, besides it has also significantly hit agricultural sector, destroying banana plantations, papaya groves, rice paddies and others thereby causing widespread destruction worth up to $1 billion.

Rawat confessed that the actual cost of damage caused by the disruption to economic activity and the cost of rebuilding homes and infrastructure is yet to be determined but it could be adequately determined within a couple of months’ time. Vardah lashed out in Chennai on Monday as it made a landfall in the afternoon.

The disaster completely disrupted the transport in the area as the Chennai Airport was non-operational on Monday since no airplane landed or took off from Chennai Airport. Chennai Airport Director, Deepak Shastri, confirmed that “as the wind speed is around 50 knots, it is not conducive to operate the flights.” Reports confirm that over 25 Chennai bound flights were diverted, nine got delayed and five were cancelled. The incoming flights were diverted to Bengaluru or Coimbatore. Meanwhile, the passengers who travelled to Chennai via trains also faced huge problems reaching their destinations due to the fewer number of buses and autorickshaws on the roads.
