Indian Institute of Management, AhmedabadVisitors watched with amazement as some of the most innovative solutions for day to day issues in life were displayed at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) on November 11. The ideas were conceived by school children from across the country.

Motorcycles that could not be started without the rider wearing helmet, a water bottle that can be folded when empty, wrist bands that can give an electric shock to molesters, packaging of medicines that changes colour as it crosses its expiry date, a sensor system in a car that does not allow a drunk person to drive it, were some of the prototypes that were put on display.

The ideas were scouted by city-based National Innovation Foundation (NIF) and Honey Bee Network through a competition event called Ignite-2011. The innovators received awards from former president of the country APJ Abdul Kalam.

Kalam said knowledge was a product of creativity, righteousness in the heart and courage. He told students that “aiming small” was like a crime.

“These children are tremendously powerful. All the ideas and innovations that they have put forth have been inspired from problems that they have encountered or observed around them. This is indicative of the fact that children do not want to live with these problems; rather they want to make an attempt to solve them,” said professor of IIM-A and executive vice-chairperson of NIF Anil Gupta.
