Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan Urge Restraint amid Jallikattu Violence

Renowned Tamil celebrities including Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan have expressed serious concerns today over the violence that took place alongside the jallikattu protests as they urged agitated students to show restraint. In his remarks, Rajinikanth mentioned that the protests by the students ‘should be etched in golden letters’ in Indian history as it has already received support of people from various walks of life including youth and women.

Referring to the violence and the police crackdown, Rajinikanth commented mentioned that “at this juncture, I am grieved to see certain incidents.” Rajinikanth pointed out that some “anti-social elements” were now trying to bring disrepute to the students’ movement and the goodwill earned by them. He urged the students not to allow this because “you should not allow them to bring disrepute to your movement and goodwill, besides the police who have been supportive of your protests.” He reiterated that “I humbly request you to immediately end this protest.” He pointed out that the Centre and state government has assured for a permanent solution for the conduct of the sport so “we have to respect that.”

Whereas on the other hand, Haasan spoke in favor of the protesting students and youth as he said that “aggressive police action on students’ passive resistance will not bear good results.” He stressed that protesters should not to resort to violence because “this is a mistake.
