Mamta Banerjee led bengal Govt to Rescue Uttam Kumar's CarThe Bengal government is all set to rescue the car of yesteryear matinee idol, the legendary Uttam Kumar’s abandoned car. The ambassador car is an emotive as well as nostalgic remembrance of Uttam, the man whom chief minister Mamata Banerjee has re-established as Bengal’s most popular icon.

The white Hindusthan Motors make with a unique registration number, WMC 8787, parked more than two decades ago in front of a yellowg four-storey building at Girish Mukherjee Road in Bhowanipore stands as testimony to the current generation’s apathy towards the star of yesteryears.

After she took charge, the chief minister had renamed Tollygunge metro station after Uttam Kumar, but the car which he used almost every day has been lying in neglect in front of his house for the past many years. Supriya Devi, with whom Uttam acted as the hero in many films, remembers the car but is unaware of its whereabouts. “Where is the car these days?”, she asked, adding, “Uttam used it almost every day. I accompanied him many times in the car.”

Supriya said, “The car was used by Uttam’s son Gautam after his death. Uttam’s wife, Gauri Devi, too, would often ride the car. I wonder what his family wants to do with it now.”

Uttam’s grandson Gaurab Chatterjee said, “We don’t use the car anymore. It can’t even be repaired. So we keep it out of garage so that it doesn’t catch moisture.” Neighbours said Uttam Kumar wouldn’t ride any other car, and the vehicle should be kept safely in one of the museums planned by the new government in memory of the legend.
