The 1.72 lakh voters of Bellary Rural assembly constituency will decide the political future of former minister B Sriramulu on Wednesday.
Sriramulu, who has grand plans of floating his own political party if he wins the by-poll, has also vowed to root out the BJP, which has fielded Gadi Lingappa.
Fearing irregularities and wooing of voters with unfair means, the Election Commission has made unprecedented security arrangements with heavy deployment of central paramilitary forces to ensure free and fair polling. The constituency has been turned into a fortress and 13 checkposts have been set up around the constituency to keep strict vigil against distribution of liquor and money to woo the voters.
All the vehicles entering the constituency are being checked thoroughly. In all, four platoons of central forces, 10 platoons of armed state reserve police and 10 platoons of district armed reserve personnel, apart from 1,250 civil policemen and homeguards, have been deployed to ensure incident-free and fair polling.
The police are searching vehicles that are entering the state from neighbouring districts of Andhra Pradesh too. The district administration has taken more than 180 persons into preventive custody.
The BJP is hoping to end the era of Reddy brothers and their associate Sriramulu in Bellary by wresting the seat from the mining barons. The party had brought actor Hema Malini to Bellary on the last day of campaigning, on Monday, to woo the voters.
