The government of India has ordered a CBI inquiry into the allegation made by the Army Chief General V K Singh who claims that he was offered a sum of Rs. 14 crore as a bribe by one of the lobbyists.

The investigation has been ordered by the Minister of Defence A K Antony, as informed to the media. Antony spoke to the press outside the parliament and termed the allegation made by the army chief as “serious” and mentioned that “We have to handle it. I have taken action.” The Defence Minister was attacked with questions by the media. Upon being asked if the army Chief had informed him about the bribe, Mr. Antony only replied saying, “The Parliament is in session” trying to avoid giving any information regarding the matter.

The Army Chief had claimed about the bribe while speaking to one of the newspapers for an interview and said that he was offered Rs. 14 crore in bribe to approve a certain percentage of about 600 below the standard motor vehicles clear for purchase. He said the offer was made by one of equipment lobbyists and he had informed the Defence Minister about the offer made to him.

Army Chief Singh said, “Just imagine, one of these men had the gumption to walk up to me and tell me that if I cleared the tranche, he would give me Rs. 14 crore. He was offering a bribe to me, to the Army chief. He told me that people had taken money before me and they will take money after me.”
