PM announces relief for Assam boat victims

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced a relief of Rs. 2 lakh for each of the relatives of the victims of the Assam boat tragedy on Tuesday. The announcement of relief was made by the office of the Prime Minister. The official statement said, “An assistance of two lakh rupees has been announced for the next of kin of each of the deceased in the tragedy from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.”

PM also spoke to the chief minister of Assam, Tarun Gogoi, and offered a helping hand in any way possible. He also said that the center is willing to help the state in financial terms, if required, to carry out relief operations for the victims and their families.

More than 100 individuals have been declared dead in a boat accident in Brahmaputra River on Monday. The tragedy has been declared to be the worst ever boat tragedy of Assam. The boat was expected to be carrying about 250 to 300 individuals, which included children and women, amongst which 103 have been declared dead whereas approximately 100 are still missing. According to initial investigations, the boat is expected to have drowned due to overload and the storm in the river.

Rescue operations are being badly affected due to the worsening weather and were halted during the night to avoid anymore tragedies.
