Pranab Mukharjee was declared as the candidate for the President of India by the UPA at the meeting held at the house of Prime Minister on Friday evening. Congress president Sonia Gandhi ended the suspense as she appealed to all the political parties to support him and declared his candidature.
Mukharjee said after being nominated, "I am deeply honored on my nomination as a candidate for the election to the office for the President of India by my party and the UPA. I am grateful to Congress president Shrimati Sonia Gandhi for this recognition. I accept this offer with all humility."
He added, “I have been fortunate to receive love, affection and the confidence of my party colleagues and also members and leaders of other political parties, I will now again seek their indulgence and support for the next few weeks."
She even did not attend the meeting. She said to the reporters that "If you think the game is over, you are wrong.” Mukherjee made a personal appeal to Mamata, the West Bengal Chief Ministers were not willing to end her war with the Congress over presidential candidate.
A senior Trinamool MP said, "How can you be a part of the UPA and yet not go with their decision. UPA will complete its term till 2014 with the support of Samajwadi Party and the BSP. It is Mamata who will suffer."
