Ex-Indian Air Force Chief SP Tyagi, who was allegedly bribed by Finmeccanica to mold the controversial AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal to benefit the company, has openly denied all claims about his involvement in the deal.
Tyagi said: “I have no idea how my name has appeared in this report. I am shocked and in disbelief. I have had nothing to do with this. How could I have been bribed? Tyagi Brothers are my cousins. They have told me they had nothing to do with the VVIP chopper scam.”
Police took AgustaWestland’s former chief executive Giuseppe Orsi into custody on Tuesday. Orsi has also denied any misconduct over the 556-million-euro deal.
Tyagi allegedly said: “To the best of my knowledge no requirements were tweaked. I have checked with my colleagues also, there were no requirements tweaked up to three months before I left. After that what happened, I will not know. There is a process. There are records. We can make no changes in any deal. The IAF can only recommend changes and only ministry can make changes. I made no changes in any deals.”
According to the prosecutors in the northern town of Busto Arsizio, Orsi recruited US-born Guido Ralph Haschke to direct dealings in India to protect the contract. Apparently, Haschke and his partner Carlo Gerosa were close with the Tyagi brothers.
